After checking on wonderlt.net and tracing through code in mx.rpc.xml we can find that  currentChild . appendChild ( xmlSpecialCharsFilter ( Object ( value ))); which is same the same as: currentChild . appendChild ( "null" );   This code, according to my original fiddle, returns an empty XML element.
